Thief steals cash from ATM after crashing stolen pickup into 7-Eleven in Philly's Mayfair section
PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A suspect stole cash from an ATM after breaking into a 7-Eleven in the Mayfair section of Philadelphia early Tuesday morning, according to police.
The burglary happened around 5:30 a.m. at the store at Tyson and Rowland avenues. Police said the suspect used a stolen white Ford pickup truck during the crime.
Neighbor Patrick Glynn said an employee was inside the store when the suspect broke through a window.
"He's traumatized. He's back there, his hands are shaking. He said he ran right in the back room, shut the door, called 911," Glynn said.
According to police, the suspect backed the truck into a concrete trash can, got out and broke a window before breaking into the ATM and stealing the cash inside.
Glynn said the pickup truck had been stolen nearby.
"They were hijacked at gunpoint around the corner. They stole the truck, came in here, backed it in, went inside the store while my friend was in the back room calling the police," Glynn said.
Witnesses told investigators the suspect left within a few minutes.
Police said officers recovered the stolen truck about an hour later on the 3300 block of Disston Street, a short distance from the store.
Some longtime Mayfair residents said the crime did not come as a surprise.
"This used to be open for 24 hours, this store. They started closing it down at 12 now because of it being robbed all the time," Glynn said.
"Doesn't surprise me," said resident John McCall. "I live right around the corner. My car actually got broken into a month ago. Had nothing in there, but it's just the principle."
Police said Northeast Detectives are reviewing surveillance video from the 7-Eleven as they continue searching for the suspect.
So far, no arrests have been made.
The incident remains under investigation.
